IAN C: 21ST CENTURY PERCUSSIONIST

(10th MAY 2005)

British drummer Ian C is currently making waves with a new approach to dance-orientated percussion. Ian has coupled traditional percussion with state of the art technology, using equipment that gives him far more flexibility and options than ever before... Read on for the low-down!

In today's ever-developing dance music scene, instruments have become a welcome addition to the modern DJ booth. US-based D:Fuse has been known to use drum pads when he spins; Holland's DJ Mason utilises a violin; and Juan Sanchez plays an electric guitar. Coupled with the increase of gadgetry found in many DJ boxes, with hardware effect units and even synthesizers making appearances, it seems that more and more external equipment is being added to today's set-ups.

As a quick background, UK-based Ian C has played percussion kits in clubs for many years, becoming renowned for using bongos in particular. He has performed at some of the best nights in Britain including The Syndicate (Blackpool), Escape (Brighton) and Pacha (London) and alongside some of the country's top DJ's including Steve Lawler, Seb Fontaine, Danny Rampling and Dave Seaman.

Then, in May 2004 he decided to return to something he'd tried years ago: electronics. He says, "My personal conclusion was that Roland made the best kit suited to my purposes and that kit was the TD8K. It is far superior to any analogue kit I had ever experienced, the main 'brain' module giving me over a thousand noises to choose from. I say noises because as well as most conceivable drum and percussion instrument sounds there are voices, guitars, stabs and hits - you name it, opening up a whole new palette for me to play with.

365Mag wondered how much of what he does in a club environment is prepared beforehand? "To keep things tight whilst playing live, I have set up ten patterns of ten noises which are 'chained' together giving me effectively a hundred sounds to use during a gig. I can monitor them through headphones as I go if need be and I know which pad on which pattern triggers which noise, much like a DJ knows his tunes".
